Chapter 4 Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes are summarized lists of the main ideas/skills that students should take away from a chapter. “Learning Outcomes” lists are not exhaustive; there may be other ideas/skills covered in the chapter that are also useful but not necessarily the main focus.

For Chapter 4 the Learning Outcomes are:

1. Compare two molecules and determine whether they are identical, constitutional isomers, enantiomers, or diastereomers.

2. Determine whether a molecule is chiral or achiral.

3. Determine whether or not an atom is a stereogenic centre.

4. Label stereogenic centres with the appropriate R or S descriptor.

5. Identify meso molecules.

6. Label alkenes with the appropriate E or Z descriptor.

7. Describe similarities and differences in the physical properties of enantiomers.
